#KMA15 When I Was 15 Feat. Yes 933 DJ Mei Gui

Yes 933 DJ Mei Gui has always been in tune with Mandopop.

Her love affair with music started since her school days.

She was always plugged into her earphones, humming along to the tunes of Jay Chou and Stefanie Sun. Local TV viewers might remember the fresh-faced lass from Campus Superstar, the televised singing contest for students.

Today, Mei Gui is part of the radio station which she grew up listening to.

Follow Yes 933 DJ Mei Gui’s Instagram for live updates from the 15th KKBOX Music Awards (KMA). Listen to Yes 933’s live broadcast of KMA this Saturday at 7pm.

As the KMAs marks its 15th edition this Saturday, DJ Mei Gui shares with us what she was like at age 15.

What were you like as a teenager? What were you doing at age 15?

I was a happy-go-lucky teen.

I enjoyed hanging out with my friends. I would stay back in school to practise singing and playing percussion in the Chinese Orchestra.

How did your teenage years shape you to be who you are today?

All that exposure to music led me to where I am today. Today, I’m a DJ who plays music for audiences every day.

I was a percussionist in the Chinese Orchestra. While waiting for my turn to hit the gong, I would often find myself humming along to the music. Sometimes the music score has 100 bars before I hit the gong once.

I was also into popular music. I would spend hours memorising song lyrics, listen to the songs on loop on my CD player. I took part in school singing competitions as an individual, as a duo, and as a group. Those were the good old days!

What message do you have for your teenage self?

I’m so proud of you. You made it through life’s ups and downs!

What music were you listening to at age 15? Was there a particular musician who impacted you?

Mandopop has always been a staple on my playlist. I have a thing for ballads.

I listened to acts such as Jay Chou, Stefanie Sun, Jolin Tsai, S.H.E., A-Mei, David Tao, Wang Lee Hom, Tanya Chua, JJ Lin and more.

I always felt a sense of pride when listening to Stefanie Sun’s song. Pursuing a career in entertainment isn’t always easy. As a fellow Singaporean, she inspired me to continue pursuing a career in music.

Which music acts are you looking forward to at the KKBOX Music Awards?

All of the acts. In particular, I’m looking forward to Qing Feng, Ava Max, OSN and Rainie Yang because it would be my first time hearing them live.

What’s on your plate?
