The next time you go to a KTV in Taiwan, you might just bump into Taiwanese singer Rachel Liang Wen Ying.
The karaoke is the singer's favourite practice space, she said: "I can’t watch a movie by myself, but I can go to the KTV on my own. Because the food served at the Taiwan KTV is really delicious.
"I could spend an entire day there. I can practise singing and catch up with the latest new music releases, and check out how well my songs are faring on the charts."
If people want to sing your song, it's a good sign of its popularity.
"When I was at a KTV by myself, I heard the customers in the next room singing my song. I really had the urge to open the door, and shout: “Surprise!” But I was a bit shy," said Liang whose glee could be heard from over the phone from Taipei.
The karaoke-goer was singing <That Girl Told Me>, Rachel's cover version of Singaporean singer Huang Yida's ballad.
The song is part of Rachel's cover album《 Still Listening in #2019 》which was released earlier this year. The album also features Gary Chaw's Superwoman and First Love, the original soundtrack of J-drama Spicy Teacher.
“These songs aren’t just important to me, but people born in the 1970s and 1980s are all very familiar with these songs," says Rachel, who is born in 1987.
"People could really resonate with the music videos. They could identify with iPod featured in the MV. Today, we listen to music on our mobile phone. I’m sharing common memories.”
Audiences can take a trip down memory lane with Rachel in person. She will be performing in Singapore next month, along with Lala Hsu and A-Lin. All three singers have taken part in I Am A Singer, a popular Chinese singing reality TV show.
