由凱文‧科斯納(Kevin Costner)首次自製、自導自演的此西部史詩片，這部長達四小時的片子不僅出人意料地大受歡迎、創下破天荒的高銷售紀錄外，更在一九九一年的第六三屆奧斯卡頒獎典禮上獨領風騷，一舉拿下了「最佳電影配樂」、「最佳影片」、「最佳導演」、「最佳改編劇本」、「最佳攝影」、「最佳剪輯」、「最佳音響」等七項大獎。
此原聲帶特別請來了擅長以交響樂創造出磅礡氣勢與感人樂符的金獎配樂大師JOHN BARRY，其過去的電影配樂作品包括有「007系列」、《遠離非洲》、《似曾相識》、《午夜牛郎》等，無數膾炙人口的精彩鉅作。
