First Tsugaru Samisen creation in Taiwan: One Way Street
While thinking of the Japanese traditional musical instrument, Samisen, the first image emerging on most people's minds is still Natsukawa Rimi, a singer from Okinawa. However, what Natsukawa Rimi plays is Okinawa Samisen and represents only one part of the evolutionary history of Samisen.
Currently, there have been numerous forms of Japanese Samisens. The Samisen being played in this album is originated from Aomori, located in the northeastern Japan. Unlike most other stringed instruments, Tsugaru Samisen is not played by "plucking", but by striking a drum skin with a plectrum, which produces a fused sound of stringed instruments and percussion instruments.
Yin Chiao Liu, a Taiwanese with an inexplicable persistence in music, heard the sound of Tsugaru Samisen by chance and forged an indissoluble bond to it since then. Under the circumstance of limited information at the time, Liu visited Japan to look for musical instruments, to observe, and to seek roots for Tsugaru Samisen several times. What has been accumulated turns into energy and further nurtures his music. Finally, the first Tsugaru Samisen album created by a Taiwanese comes into the world.
Taking the traditional musical instrument as a staring point, the album is a collection of six fusions of modern pop and rock style creative repertoire, as well as two adaptations of Aomori ballads. Its Name "One Way Street" represents Liu's passionate pursuit of Tsugaru Samisen, which echoes ancient players' resolution——to go on, regardless winter or summer,clear or snow.
