Taiwan's remarkable cultural and ecological diversity is largely due to its topography.
With mountains reaching nearly 4,000 meters, Taiwan hosts several unique ecosystems. But what is not commonly known is that the adjacent deep-sea Kuroshio Trench reaches an equally impressive depth of 4,000 meters.

This reveals a stunning feature -- from trench to peak, the actual rise of Taiwan is a staggering 8,000 meters.

With these 8,000 meters in mind, I musically trace Taiwan's topography from deep-sea hydrothermal vents and the related seafaring Tao tribe of Orchid Island, to the Amis people of Taiwan's coastline, and finally to the high mountain tribes of the Rukai and Bunun.

A crowning accomplishment of this album's undertaking has been the recording of the Bunun song, "Pasibutbut," where the singers were successfully recorded to 16 discrete channels. This ancient song is revered for its totally unique compositional style and has never been recorded in such high resolution before. Mixed to stereo, it is presented here in its entirety as the final track.

I hope this music, evolved from 8,000 meters of deep oceans and high mountains, will inspire appreciation for those who choose to listen.
