Empress Wu - The Musical is an original work. First staged in Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in 2012, the musical is based on the life, loves and times of China's first and only female emperor, Empress Wu had ruled the country with an iron fist more than a thousand years ago. Tang China during her reign was the richest and most powerful country in the world and the Empress held together a sprawling empire against external threats and internal court intrigues. Empress Wu's ascent to power was not only littered with acts of betrayal and treachery but also of honour and loyalty. A controversial figure both condemned and praised by historians in equal measures, she was ultimately the symbol of female defiance in Confucian China.

This album is the live recording of the songs from the first two parts of the musical trilogy – Part One: Empress Wu - The Concubine; and Part Two: Empress Wu - The Empress.

Empress Wu - The Musical won several awards at the Boh Cameronian Arts Award 2013.
