"I've spent so many nights away from the man that I love. It's about that really yearning feeling, when you're in bed alone. It's a love song." It's also, he says, a fine testament to his main collaborator on the album (aside, of course, from the other Scissors).
"Alex helmed this album and I'm really proud of him because he went out of his comfort zone in a lot of ways. He's a total techno-head and I think he really pushed himself. That's why I was so excited to work with him, because I knew he would."
Keep Your Shoes On is fun disco-funk, like electro if it had warmth, and came out in 1975. Or as Jake puts it: "It's really ridiculous, funny and bonkers, and I don't know what the fuck it's about. But I love it."
Inevitable, all 808s and heartbreak, was co-written with Pharrell, and it has his gossamer-light touch. "I was pretty intimidated," confesses Jake of his collaboration with the Neptunes whiz, "and there was clearly tension in the air, but I loved writing with him. He's a genius, with an awesome gift for melody."
First single Only The Horses is no-holds-barred synth-phonic rave-pop, "a party song" written after one of his many adventures last year. It was co-produced with Calvin Harris. "When we wrote that one, I immediately knew that he'd help knock it out of the park," says Jake.
