今年11月，小號大師Randy Brecker就要慶祝他的70大壽了！自從60年代出道以來，他和07年辭世的薩克斯風老弟Michael Brecker就一直遊走於爵士與流行間，除了硬底子地加入硬式咆勃兩大代表人物Horace Silver和Art Blakey的樂團外，也參與交融爵士、搖滾、放克風格的樂團「Blood, Sweat & Tears」和「Dreams」，毫不在意音樂的界限與定義。今年，長期和流行音樂家合作密切、擔任錄音室樂手的Randy，選擇詮釋許多共事過的流行樂手的作品做為70歲的人生註腳。因此，【RandyPop!】專輯名稱不但有邁入70，成為一眾年輕樂手心中尊敬的老爹之意，亦有回顧自己的音樂人生的象徵。

專輯的製作和編曲任務由鋼琴名家Kenny Werner擔任，邀演樂手則包括薩克斯風手David Sanchez、吉他手Adam Rogers、貝斯手John Pattitucci及鼓手Nate Smith。更特別的是，這張在紐約知名爵士俱樂部Blue Note所現場錄製的作品更邀請Randy的女兒Amanda Brecker前來獻唱。Werner的編曲並不標新立異，在明顯保留原曲樣貌的同時，細膩地用管樂、歌手的編排來塑造不同的質感。

首曲《New Frontier》源自樂團Steely Dan主唱Donald Fagen的單飛專輯【The Nightfly】，同時也是Randy在80年代初參與錄製的專輯。原曲略帶Disco感的電子聲響改由電吉他和磅礡管樂的放克風味取代。Randy加了效果器的小號聲以刻意挑選的延伸音刺激著聽覺展開，逐漸讓音符密集度和音高攀升，最終的高音飆奏讓人難以想像是出自近70歲老翁之口。

Randy的老東家Blood, Sweat & Tears在專輯【Child Is Father to the Man】以管弦編曲交織出的《I Can’t Quit Her》，在Werner手中變成5/8的版本，Nate Smith的鼓在不同即興者演奏者均試圖從小鼓、Tom-tom的點綴式伴奏逐漸拓展為快速的銅鈸鼓點。Werner和Sanchez都是擅長以破碎、玩弄節奏的旋律發展即興張力的高手，在Smith和Patitucci默契十足的鋪陳下更顯如魚得水。 James Brown的《I’ve Got a Bag of My Own》保留了強而有力的old-school funk節奏，卻在管樂齊奏旋律上增添了幾分不和諧感。Bruce Springsteen的《Meeting Across the River》在原曲不但有Randy的參與，更有爵士貝斯大師Richard Davis的演奏。原曲的鍵盤分散和弦改由Rogers帶有幾分Bill Frisell式的伴奏取而代之，Randy的小號緊隨在Amanda的歌聲旁，雖然不算是正式的即興，卻依舊展現他非常旋律性的一面。

而搭配著本張專輯的出版，網路的爵士名人「Jazz Video Guy」特地找了幾位參與錄音的團員與Randy進行一個小時的視訊訪談，從Randy的音樂人生、對他英年早逝的弟弟Michael Brecker的想法到兩人共組Brecker Brothers的歷程，無所不聊。想知道70、80年代的爵士傳奇，不妨就從這張專輯開始吧！
