Lu was born in Taipei/Taiwan and began to play piano at the age of five. He studied with Klaus Hellwig and Michael Krist at University of the Arts Berlin (Konzertexamen) and University for Music and Performing Arts Vienna (Master). In 2006, the Vienna Cziffra Foundation awarded him the "Cziffra Prize", in recognition of his outstanding achievements in performing G. Cziffra's Compositions. He is working now as Assistant Professor at National Taiwan University of the Arts and Chinese Culture University.
Yi-Chih Lu is one of the most brilliant among the young generation of Taiwanese pianists. Beside his 13 Prizes in national and international music competition, such as Maria Canals, Sendai, Hummel, and Beethoven, His CD “My Chopin; My Brahms” was awarded from the Gold Melody Award as the “Best Interpreter of Classical Music Prize”. Highlights of the 2015/16 season include the Solo Performance in Vancouver TAIWANFest 2015, Miami International Piano Festival and the National Concert Hall Taiwan.

He has been invited regularly to give piano recitals in America, Europe and Asia. In the pass years, he performed in Musikverein in Vienna, Berlin Philharmoie, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and many other main concert halls. He has also worked with important orchestras including Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Sendai Philharmonic, Sendai City Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Metropolitan Orchestra, Taiwan Philharmonic (NSO), Taipei Century Symphony Orchestra, Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Sun Symphony Orchestra, Buxthehude Jugend Orchester, Taipei Philharmonic Youth Symphony Orchestra, BerlinClassicPlayers, and Arad Philharmonic. He is also enthusiastic about playing and arranging Taiwanese piano compositions and folk Melodies. His piano arrangement on Taiwanese Folksongs was published in September 2014.
