We Can't Let Go: Frozen OST Tops KKBOX Top 100 International Hits in SG & MY

It’s been a tumultuous first half of 2020, to say the least. As we welcome July, we at KKBOX have been looking back on the last six months to see what tunes have been keeping our listeners going during these unprecedented times.

Here are some of the highlights from our mid-year review of the Singapore and Malaysia music charts’ Top 100 singles.

Frozen II OST Rules at Number 1

Dubbed the sequel’s answer to the ubiquitous hit Let It Go from the first movie, Into The Unknown by Idina Menzel and AURORA predictably took the No. 1 spot in both Singapore and Malaysia.

But the highly-anticipated follow-up to the beloved 2013 animated film – released late last year (Nov) – proved that unwavering Disney mettle even further by pretty much sweeping the top 10 on both charts.

Songs like All Is Found by Evan Rachel Wood (who plays Queen Iduna, the mother of Anna and Elsa, in the movie) and Show Yourself (Idina Menzel and Evan Rachel Wood) also placed highly.

A Literal Viral Hit

With COVID-19 at the forefront of everyone’s minds, it’s no surprise Be A Flu Fighter by homegrown rapper DJ Lean placed at No. 2 on the Singapore chart.

Released to recognise efforts to combat the virus and to pay tribute to all frontline healthcare workers, the upbeat track is a great reminder that we should all do our part to stop this global pandemic.

We think DJ Lean may be one to watch. Apart from that very topical tune, three more of his releases, namely Travel Wander (Lush Spring Mix), My Mama and Before You Say I Do, all placed on the Singapore chart.

Bieber Fever Returns

After flying slightly under the radar over the last couple of years (during which time he got hitched to American model Hailey Baldwin and also suffered issues with his health), Canadian pop phenom Justin Bieber seems to be on the up and up with our listeners, thanks mostly to his collaborations with other artists.

The Biebs takes four spots on both charts with popular tunes: sultry earworm Yummy, his first single as a solo artist in almost four years; the romantic Intentions (feat. Quavo); slow jam Stuck With U (feat. Ariana Grande) and Forever (with Post Malone and Clever).

You go, Biebs.

Girl Power

Strong female vocals were a definite trend throughout our charts, with pop A-listers like Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Halsey, Billie Eilish, Camila Cabello and Dua Lipa all making appearances.

For instance, the latter scored three spots on both charts for Break My Heart, Don’t Start Now and Physical – all from her sophomore album Future Nostalgia released in March.

In the words of Beyonce, who run the world? GIRLS.

Life After One Direction

DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME. Practice social distancing. Watermelon Sugar Video Out Now.

Going it solo after enjoying massive success as a boy band can be tough, as acts like Boyzone and Take That have shown in the past. But the guys of British group One Direction have done well to buck that trend, and KKBOX listeners seem to agree as not one but three former 1D members appear on our charts.

With his Mick Jagger swagger, Harry Styles seems to have the midas touch, with two tracks, Watermelon Sugar and Adore You, appearing on both charts. A third tune, Falling, made the cut on the Singapore chart, but not Malaysia’s.

Styles’ former bandmate Niall Horan clocked in with one track, Put A Little Love On Me, on both charts. A third 1D member, Louis Tomlinson, just barely snuck onto the Singapore chart with his song Walls, but sadly fell short across the causeway.

Nothing like a little friendly competition between ex-bandmates, we say, to inspire some quality music. We’ll be waiting.
