Join Yosifu on his lifelong voyage through art.

Thousands of years ago, the Austronesian people sailed from Taiwan to many different parts of the globe, embarking on a journey of development and expansion. Continuing in the same proud tradition of his Austronesian forebears, Yosifu is using his art and his music to reach out to the world, navigating this everlasting voyage through the contemporary era.

Yosifu is most renowned as a visual artist, but his musical DNA is clearly evident in many of his manifold creations, depicting diverse aspects of indigenous culture through a fusion of traditional and contemporary artistic techniques. His debut album, “VOYAGER”, continues this tradition, reflecting the bold use of color, distinct themes, and the dynamic styles of all his artistic creations to date.

In this album, you can hear the fruits of Yosifu’s many years of songwriting, fused with reinterpretations of traditional indigenous songs. These pieces reflect Yosifu’s life experiences and the themes he has encountered throughout his journey, extending from identity to cultural heritage to environmental change.

A long-time fan of electronic ambient music, Yosifu has collaborated with two award-winning producers on this project – Judy Wu (Wu Chin-tai) and Wenna – blending electronic and contemporary folk styles. The album’s main visual theme centers around Yosifu’s long-awaited self-portrait and is designed by Grammy-nominated designer Civi Cheng. Yosifu wants to invite listeners to experience his heartfelt journey across the world through visual art, music, and the written word.

Join Yosifu, in this solitary yet vibrantly colorful journey, as he traverses self-exploration on the path to the discovery of one’s self-worth. As Yosifu continues his life’s voyage through music and song, his one wish is to inspire others to cherish and embrace their cultures and identities.

Yosifu is a practitioner who influences life through music and art. He is the quintessential contemporary VOYAGER.

Yosifu

With a voice sometimes as light as a feather, sometimes as turbulent as the waves,
in this album the internationally renowned painter Yosifu, transitions from visual art to music, interrogating the infinite possibilities of contemporary art forms.

An artist of Amis descent, Yosifu was born in the Matadim Village of Yuli, Hualien. He currently resides in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is one of the very few artists in Europe who focuses on Taiwanese indigenous themes in his international works. In his colorful artistic creations, one can hear the melodies of life itself.

From a young age, influenced by the music of his village and church, Yosifu developed a love for singing and aspired to be a singer. At eighteen, he left his hometown to pursue his dreams, winning singing competitions and gathering a fanbase. However, the path of his early career in music was rocky and ultimately unfulfilling, leading him to seek healing in distant lands. After a twenty-year journey, and nurtured by the artistic environment of Edinburgh, he transformed himself from a painter to an international artist, once again making a name for himself in Europe and Taiwan.

Yosifu’s works are characterized by bold colors and distinct themes, filled with strong visual tension, transforming traditional art into vibrant, fashionable expressions. His bold cross-cultural innovations have garnered attention in the art world both in Taiwan and around the globe. Along the way, he has maintained a focus on social issues and public welfare, inspiring budding indigenous artists and drawing attention to environmental issues. He frequently collaborates across genres including music, film, public installation art, and fashion, continuously showcasing contemporary indigenous art.

But throughout his many years exploring the globe and creating visual art, Yosifu has never forgotten his original goal of making his own music. In 2025, he finally reclaims his identity as a musician, gathering years of accumulated passion and inspiration to release his debut solo album, “VOYAGER.” This album represents not only a return to his musical roots but also a celebration of his journey as an artist and an individual.

Through “VOYAGER,” Yosifu invites listeners to embark on a shared journey, exploring themes of identity, belonging, and the deep connections to land and culture that resonate within us all.

1. O Ina no Sera
Mother Earth

While living in the UK, the news I receive from Taiwan is often about its natural disasters, its earthquakes and landslides, as well as reports about the illegal logging of its sacred trees and the pollution pouring into its rivers. Mother Earth nurtures the land and all its life, yet we harm her through our greed and endless exploitation. Through this song, I hope to awaken and heal the wounded Earth, and encourage us all to reflect on how we treat the land. I want to remind everyone to cherish Mother Earth and stop the destruction of our one and only planet.

In this song, I invited two female vocalists to lend their voices. One is my Scottish sister, Fiona Ramage, who is performing the Celtic traditional song “Aird Uí Chuain”, expressing nostalgia for one’s homeland. The other is my Amis sister, Amoy, who infuses the song with traditional Amis chanting. Their voices resonate with me like a call from the land, representing both the beauty and the sorrow of Mother Earth.

2. Sapikpik no Alilis
An Eagle’s Wings

This song is a traditional melody I learned in my youth that was widely sung in many Amis and Puyuma villages. The original version is lively and rhythmic. On one level, indigenous songs express meaning through their lyrics, while on another level they express the emotions felt deep within the soul.

I once asked a friend to accompany me on a keyboard with simple electronic sounds, while I sang along. As a gust of wind blew by, I felt like an eagle spreading its wings, soaring into the sky. Through this song, I wish to share that moment, as if an eagle is soaring majestically over mountains and seas.

3. O Wawa no Riyar
Child of the Ocean

When I wrote this song, I was in Scotland, wandering for many years, often longing for my home and deeply missing the Pacific Ocean. During the Ilisin Festival in my village, I was still far away, so my family sent me photos of the celebration. Looking at them brought tears to my eyes, and my emotions began to pour out. I am a child of the ocean, but the helplessness and confusion of being away from home has been a bitter lifelong lesson for me.

The ocean is deep blue and mysterious, yet it is also inclusive and connects many different peoples. It is because of this that I often like to visit the coast to stand on the rocks, gazing at the crashing waves, and finding solace from absorbing some of its immense power.

4. Hana 野花
Wildflower

Wildflowers in the valley may not possess the beauty of greenhouse blossoms, but they carry the enduring fragrance nurtured by the land. This song is dedicated to the many dark-skinned girls and in the indigenous villages. They are beautiful, yet due to the singular value placed on paler skin tones in Asia, these children often lack confidence. This even extended to my own sisters!

I decided to write this song to encourage indigenous children to embrace their majestic beauty and recognize their uniqueness. In many other cultures, these beautiful darker skin tones are considered the epitome of sensuality and desirability!

5. Cascas
Waterfall

Expressing one’s emotions can be very direct for indigenous people! I wrote this song in my twenties after suffering a broken heart and feeling a deep sadness that took me a long time to recover from. Looking back now with hindsight and maturity, that experience makes me smile. Reflecting on this song years later, I can feel that every word and melody truly expresses my sincere emotions of that time.

Love pours out like a waterfall, but if you do not accept it, all that love will simply flow into the ocean. Thankfully, music has always accompanied and healed me during times of difficulty, which goes to show that music really can save you.

Song of Joy feat. Taiwu Ballads Troupe

In my youth, the songs sung during the Ilisin Festival in the village were mostly in a call-and-response format. For this song I challenged myself to collaborate with producers Judy Wu (Wu Chin-tai) and Wenna to create a brand new contemporary call-and-response song using this ancient traditional form. I take the lead, inviting the sisters from the Taiwu Ballads Troupe to respond. They are of the Paiwan people, and I am of the Amis people, so this song is like a duet between the mountains and the sea. Through this song, I want to share the certainty that although we may meet many challenges and suffer setbacks in life, we can always create and embody beauty in and by ourselves.

Years ago, I was invited by the legendary traditional indigenous folk song teacher, Camake Valaule, to teach painting to the students at Taiwu Elementary School. While filming a program there recently, I had the pleasure of meeting up with these students again. They have now all grown up, but they are continuing to pass down their beautiful songs and traditions to the next generations through the Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe. It is truly wonderful that destiny has brought us together once more.

7. Palimu
Song of Offering

Every year, before the Ilisin Festival in the Matadim village, the women gather spices near their homes to make the yeast for winemaking, leading to every household creating their own unique flavors. During the festival, the women offer their homemade wine to honor the warriors and elders, ultimately presenting the wine to the chief, who tastes it and blesses the women who offered it. “Palimu” is sung by the community during this time as a special offering song for women.

At the end of the album, I invited family members from the village to record this song in a traditional a cappella style, hoping to share with everyone the most authentic sounds from the village. Over the years, I have travelled all over the world through art and music, but I always yearn to return to simplicity and back to the roots of my existence, to further explore and appreciate my culture. It is these traditional songs of my hometown which are the calls that most resonate with the memories in my soul.

----

Yosifu Says

As a child, I could spend entire days immersed in music, when I considered singing as my number one purpose in life. As I grew up, I tried my very hardest to strive for this goal. Then when I thought I had finally found my path to success, I was forced to put everything on hold because of a contract dispute. From this I embarked upon a journey of wandering, carrying the pieces of my shattered dreams with me – a journey that took me all the way to the other side of the Earth and the city of Edinburgh in Scotland. My dream of ever making music again appeared lost once more.

In that foreign land, I unexpectedly embarked on a different journey of artistic creation. After years of being absent from the art scene, I reemerged as an artist once more, surprising many and not least myself.

For igniting the spark to this dream project, I am eternally grateful to Ken Yang, the founder of Wind Music, who invited me to Wind Music to start this process. Whenever I think back to that moment I am overwhelmed with emotion and gratefulness.

I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my producer Judy Wu (Wu Chin-Tai) for boldly believing in me, and to the master planner Billy Chiu, as well as to the young and talented co-producer Wenna, who added vibrant musical colors to this album.

Finally, I want to thank my wonderful God for providing me with the opportunity to sing again, fulfilling my childhood dream. It turns out that dreams need to be buried in the ground before they can sprout at the right time and place.
